General Information

The project is investigating a possible new IP based Radio Access Network (RAN) architecture for LTE version of the UMTS. Current RANs are based on ATM based architecture where Node B and RNCs are connected using E1/E3 links. With diversification of traffic in the LTE version of UMTS networks the requirements of RAN will change. We have developed OPNET based simulation models to examine the performance of RAN for packet based traffic using the conventional DCH and CPCH channel based packet traffic. Currently we are examining the effect of HSDPA and HSUPA on the ATM based RAN. In the next phase of the work we are developing carrier class based ethernet model to develop an new IP based RAN architecture for future packet base traffic.We are developing OPNET based simulation models to compare the ATM and IP based RANs.
