General Information

In general a PEP sits at either end of the satellite link and may perform various tasks such as splitting the TCP connection, caching, etc. Obviously, there are downfalls associated with the use of PEP: Some PEPs break end-to-end semantics of Internet protocols, and often do not work if use IPsec/VPN. However, there are many practical advantages: A well designed PEP can offer significant performance improvements because it can implement devices which either compensate for the poor satellite transmission quality, or it can also adapt the implementation of certain protocols to specific harsh conditions such as large delays and high bit error rate.In this project, we propose to look at novel techniques for enhancing the performance of IP protocols using PEPs and cross layer design which would allow upper layers of the network to take into account specific characteristics of the wireless channel.
