Biography

Kerry Hinton was born in Adelaide, Australia, in 1955. He received an Honours degree in electrical engineering and Masters degree in mathematical sciences from the University of Adelaide, Australia, in 1977 and 1981 respectively. He received a Ph.D. degree in Theoretical Physics from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne (UK) and a Diploma in Industrial Relations from the Newcastle Upon Tyne Polytechnic in 1984. He worked at the Telstra Research Laboratories (TRL) from 1984 until it was closed down at the end of 2005. During his years at TRL he worked on analytical and numerical modelling of optical systems and components. He also worked on physical layer issues for Automatically Switched Optical Networks, high speed modulation techniques and monitoring in all-optical networks. In 2006 Kerry joined the ARC Special Centre on Ultra-Broadband Information Networks at the University of Melbourne. Since then, he has been working on the technological requirements of ultra-high capacity optical networks, focusing on all-optical signal processing, polarisation mode dispersion and signal monitoring in all-optical networks.
