Biography

Dalma Novak is Professor and Chair of Telecommunications in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Melbourne, Australia. She received the degrees of Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) with First Class Honours and PhD from the University of Queensland, Australia, in 1987 and 1992, respectively. From January 1992 to August 1992, she was a Lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Queensland. In September 1992, she joined the Photonics Research Laboratory (PRL), a member of the Australian Photonics Cooperative Research Centre (CRC), at the University of Melbourne where her responsibilities over the years have included Deputy Director and Research Director of PRL, CRC Key Researcher, Director of the CRC Melbourne Division, and CRC Education Director. From July 2000 to January 2001, she was a Visiting Researcher in the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of California Los Angeles, and the Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, DC. From June 2001 - December 2003 she was a Technical Section Lead at Dors'l Networks, Inc. and later at Corvis Corporation, in Columbia, MD.

Her research interests include WDM networks, fiber-wireless communication systems, ultrafast optical communication systems, high-speed optoelectronic devices and circuits, and wireless communication technologies.

She has authored or coauthored more than 170 papers in these areas. Professor Novak is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Journal of Lightwave Technology, and a member of the Technical Program Committees of numerous conferences related to optical communications and microwave technologies including the 2005 Optical Fiber Communication Conference and the 2004 International Microwave Symposium.
