Biography

Senior Principal Research Engineer, Adaptive Wireless research stream, CSIRO Information and Communications Technology Centre (ICT Centre).

Formal Qualifications: BSc,1973, BE(Hons),1975, PhD, 1982 Sydney University

Dr Bunton is a leading member of the Adaptive Wireless Group at the CSIRO ICT Centre. His work covers areas as diverse as antenna and RF systems design, camera optics, DSP algorithms and hardware, image processing, innovative signal processing on FPGAs including beam-formers and correlators, analogue electronics and sensors. Projects, many of them commercial, to which he has made the main or a major contribution, include:

  • The wideband communications system for the prototype Numbat mine rescue vehicle;
  • A4 Digital Audio Processor especially its applications to ?Hi-Fi? quality digital audio and commercial and automotive loudspeakers systems;
  • Broadcast digital audio, improvements to the ABC Australia DCART system;
  • Collision avoidance system designed to operate in coal mines;
  • The development of a method of detecting mine roof instability;
  • Image compression algorithms and hardware;
  • Through the earth ELF mine communications system;
  • Specialised hardware for generating sonar images with exceedingly high equivalent computing power;
  • Eight channel radio test bed for MIMO development and testing;
  • SKA concept development in particular the Cylindrical Reflector concept;
  • The SKAMP upgrade with Sydney University;

Dr. Bunton holds 1 patent and has 74 publications (42 since 1999) in the area of SKA concepts, electronics, digital signal processing and astronomy.
