Biography
Thas Ampalavanapillai Nirmalathas received the BE (Hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Melbourne in 1993. He received his PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering also from the University of Melbourne in 1997 for his thesis on experimental investigation of high frequency optical signal generation at the Photonics Research Laboratory. In 1997, he joined the Photonics Research Laboratory (PRL), a member of the Australian Photonics Cooperative Research Centre (APCRC), at the University of Melbourne where he held Research Fellow and Senior Research Fellow positions before moving to his current position as a Senior Lecturer. He is also the Director of PRL and the Program Manager of the Telecommunications Technologies Research Program in the APCRC.
He is a Senior Member of IEEE and is also the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society's representative on the Steering Committee of the CLEO Pacific Rim Conference and he has been a member of committees associated with a number of international conferences in his field of expertise.
His current research interests include fibre-wireless networks, optical networks, optical signal monitoring, photonic packet switching technologies, ultra-fast optical communications systems and applications of mode-locked semiconductor lasers.
He has written more than 68 technical papers in his field and has given a number of invited presentations at leading international conferences. He also holds one International and one Provisional Patents.
