Biography
Research Leader of the Adaptive Wireless research stream at the CSIRO ICT Centre. The research emphasis is the development of a multi-channel propagation testbed for use in the study of MIMO systems.
Formal Qualifications: BE(Hons1) 1972, M.Eng.Sc (1978), PhD (1985) Sydney University.
Professional Memberships: SMIEEE, and member of SP, Comms, VT, C&S Societies. Member of SMPTE.
Present Role: Leading the research group at CSIRO ICT Centre developing a multi-channel propagation testbed for use in MIMO systems. In 2002, this group began an internal CSIRO research project in MIMO and Space-Time Processing, and has since been very active in fostering collaboration with other University and industrial partners. He is presently Associate Supervisor of 3 PhD students undertaking research in MIMO related areas.
Expertise: Considerable experience in signal processing, computing and design and development of electronic systems. He has successfully led numerous R&D projects while at CSIRO, many of which have scoped from strategic research through to commercialisation. These have principally been in the field of electrical engineering, but covering many application areas such as radioastronomy, real-time control systems, high-speed data acquisition, large software systems, video processing, broadcast engineering, ELF radio communications, VLSI design, digital audio, and ultrasonic imaging systems. He has also been heavily involved with the career development and mentoring of electronics engineers and numerous under-graduate and post-graduate students. He has been a research leader at CSIRO for 10 years, being directly responsible for research teams of typically 25 people throughout that period. He has also been the recipient of 3 research grants from the Australian Coal Association, and has had considerable experience in the commercialisation of CSIRO's research output. Awarded a CSIRO medal in 1992 for the "development and application of FFT technology", based on 2 VLSI chip designs (A41102 and A4) and their applications in audio, ultrasonic, radar, sonar and medical systems.
Awarded Prize for Outstanding Research from Australian Coal Association 1999/2000.
Co-inventor for Patents in FFT Chip Technology (1987, 4-member team) and Underground Wireless Communication System (2000, 3-member team).
