Description

The Centre for Telecommunication and Microelectronic Technologies was established at Victoria University in late 2001. The Centre has very strong links with Government, industry and research centres both nationally and internationally and prides itself in selecting research projects that benefit industry as well as being academically challenging.

Research

The present research activities of the Centre is organised in the following areas:

Mobile Communications and Signal Processing

  • System Considerations: Capacity enhancement of Adaptive (Smart) Antennas, MESH networks
  • Air Interface: Propagation measurement and modelling; Wideband channel sounding; Indoor Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) measurements; Algorithm development for high capacity modulation schemes; MIMO algorithms for OFDM networks; Multi-User Detection (MUD) for W-CDMA networks
  • Wireless Technology: Radio terminal design issues; Duplexing, Diversity; Direct Conversion; DC and IM2 offset correction; Basestation design issues; Linearisation of RF non-linear power amplifiers; Peak to Average power reduction algorithms

Microelectronics Circuits, Systems and Implementation

  • Analog RF circuits: MEMs
  • Mixed Signal: A/D and D/A
  • DSP/FPGA/ASIC: Algorithms for wireless systems; Low Power; Reconfigurable systems

The Centre has a well-equipped RF laboratory with vector analysis capabilities to 6GHz and scalar analysis to 20GHz. In addition the Centre has access a dedicated microelectronics laboratory with access to MACH-D capability for testing of system-on-a chip (SoC) solutions.

Australian Telecommunications CRC Various Industrial Organisations

Education

An important aspect of the Centre is to provide training in core activity areas. This is done through industrially focused and sponsored Chipskills programs, Australian Telecommunications CRC, National Networked Tele Test Facility and Australian Microelectronics Network and industry targeted professional development courses.

The School of Communications and Informatics also provides a number of postgraduate courses to complement Telecommunications and Microelectronics Strategic Research Area. These courses are:

  • M.Eng. Microelectronic Engineering
  • M.Eng.Sc. in Telecommunications Engineering
  • M.Eng.Sc. in Computer Systems
  • M.Eng. research degree in all the areas of the Centre activity
  • Ph.D. research degree in all the areas of the Centre activity
